Around Lucerne's old town

Point 1 of 9 – Free Walking Tour

Kapellbrücke

LocalGuide from Lucerne, Silvan

Some dates

  • The water tower was built a few decades before the Kapellbrücke.
  • The water tower is 35 meters high. The circumference is 39 meters. The walls are up to 3 meters thick.
  • In the water tower there is a hidden room, which served as a treasury of the Lucerne state treasure. This treasure was looted by two state officials in 1758.
  • 1339 - This is how old the oldest wooden beams are in the attic of the water tower
  • The Kapellbrücke is the oldest standing covered wooden bridge in Europe.

In the night of August 17-18, 1993, the Kapellbrücke was in flames.

Tip 1
The water tower can be rented for events.

Tip 2
Historically, the pictures on the Kapellbrücke are beautiful. But many burned 30 years ago during the big fire. Historically, even more exciting Gibel pictures can be discovered in the Spreuerbrücke 600 meters downstream on the theme of Totentanz.

Quiz

The water tower has a special shape.
Look at it carefully. How many corners does the water tower have?

7 Corners

Nope. Wrong. The water tower certainly has a special shape. But 7 corners were probably a bit too complicated in the Middle Ages. Try again.

8 Corners

Exactly. Bravo, you counted perfectly.

And now, go to point 2.

10 Corners

Uh, unfortunately no. 10 is a bit too much.

Where is point 2?

> Walk across the bridge and look at the pictures.
> Go to the square behind the chapel
> There we meet at the Kapellplatz at the clothing store Blue Lemon.
